Strong CurriculumReligion is integrated into the entire curriculum daily. Please read more about our deep commitment to teach students about the Catholic faith. This can be found under Catholic Identity. In the lower grades, writing, spelling and English lessons are integrated within the reading program. The Language Arts program in the upper grades includes the study of spelling, grammar, literature, and a daily writing activity. The literature anthology presents a variety of literary forms, and each grade reads and analyzes novels throughout the year. Students are encouraged to submit their writings to Wide Awake Club in the Flint Journal newspaper each week. Each month students are required to read a minimum number of age appropriate pages for independent reading. Primary level math introduces basic math concepts including graphing, patterns, money, time, measurements, sets, geometry, problem solving and algebraic concepts. In the Junior High, primary level concepts are expanded and also include rational numbers, percents, statistics, equations and inequalities, perimeter, area and volume. The science curriculum focuses on thinking critically and creatively in the framework of the scientific process. Hands-on materials are used to enhance concepts through student and team investigations. Social studies in the lower grades include the following themes: community helpers, good citizens, civics and map skills. Social studies integrates with math through charts and graphs and also with writing, religion, geography, science, art and technology. In the upper grades, earlier skills and concepts continue to be developed. Emphasis is on early exploration, colonization of the Americas, geography and U.S. and world history. Michigan history is the central focus of 4th grade social studies. All subjects are integrated with technology. The preschool program is taught by a certified Early Childhood Educator. This well-planned preschool experience strives to develop in each child a positive attitude about himself or herself as a learner. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, create and to express themselves through art, music, drama, games, communication, play and problem solving. A certified physical education instructor teaches physical education classes twice weekly. Team interaction, fitness and personal development are stressed. Music is an integral part of prayer at St. Pius X School. Children in kindergarten through grade six attend weekly music classes. Music is an elective in grades seven and eight. Students in music class learn basic music theory, bells, church music for liturgies, music for fun, and learning about instruments and composers. Recorders are taught in fourth grade. The children show off their musical talents at Christmas time with a musical performance for friends and family. All teachers have earned a Bachelor's degree and six have either a Masters degree or beyond. St. Pius X School is accredited by the Michigan Association of NonPublic Schools. |
